Bowl Cozy--Use 100% cotton fabric, batting and
thread if you plan on using it
in the microwave.
You will
need two nine inch squares of fabric, and two nine inch squares of batting.
(This size is suitable for soup bowls)
- Draw an X on each
piece of batting. (as shown above)
- Place each piece of fabric face down on the table.
- Place each piece of batting on top of the fabric pieces.
- Put a couple of pins in each one to hold them together
- Sew right on the lines you drew.
1"
- Fold each piece in half with the fold on the bottom
- Make marks 1" up from the fold on each side. Make
marks 2 1/2" in from the edge on the bottom. Draw a line to connect the
marks. Sew right on the lines. Use scissors to trim off the extra fabric 1/4" away from stitching.
- Open up the pieces and then fold in half the other
direction, again with the fold on the bottom. Mark them in the same fashion.
Sew along the lines. Trim fabric 1/4" from stitching.
- Find something round to use as a template to round off your
corners. You can do two corners at once, if you place your pieces one on top of
the other. Place a couple of pins in to hold in place. Mark with a pen and then
cut along your line with scissors. Do this for all of the corners.
-Before you sew, double check to make sure you have right
sides of fabric together.
- If you have a walking foot this next step will be easier.
Sew the pieces together leaving about a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave about
2" of a straight section open so that you can turn it right side out. Sew
very slowly when you are going over the areas where the darts are. You do not
want to bend or break your needle or thread.
-Once you have it all turned right side out place a pin where
your opening is to hold edges together. Set your stitch length a little bit
longer than you would use for piecing. Topstitch a scant 1/4" away from
the edge all the way around. DONE!
Play around with measurements to create different sizes.
I made one 25% larger and it fits a serving size bowl. I used
11.25" squares. I made the marks on the sides 1.25" up from the
bottom edge. I made my marks on the bottom edge 2.5" in from the side.
