May letter

As a group, we are doing some great things. We have many champions in our group. I am happy to see so many people participating in the community quilts. I am also impressed with how many people have been making shirt savers for "Come Share". The fidget quilts for "Come Share" are still being made as well. When the executive director said they would like a few quilts that are the size of a single sized bed, someone offered one. Another person said they would be interested in making a quilt as a group project to give them. We can talk about this at our meeting and come up with a plan. I think it would be fun to have several people create a quilt together at Brookswood. I have also had some people interested in providing "Come Share" with some lap blankets.
The executive director at "Come Share" also had another special ask. There is a lady that attends their day programs that used to be an avid quilter. She even made instructional videos that were apparently quite popular at one time. Her videos were before Youtube was even a thing, so she was a true pioneer! Unfortunately, she is now almost completely blind. Her last quilt was almost finished, but not quite, when she was no longer able to continue. The executive director left it out for me on a table on the day of our last meeting. I picked it up and examined it. The lady who was losing her eyesight was desperately trying to finish sewing  the binding, but was unknowingly making a terrible mess of stitching. It was very sad to see. The first person I showed it to offered to finish it. She just gave me a progress report. She has tediously been working on picking out the mess, and said she is hoping to have it finished by our June party. Acts like this show the goodheartedness of the people in our group.

In addition to all of these accomplishments, I have also been impressed with the number of quilts being shown at our Sew, Show 'n' Tells this year. People have really been working hard! We love to ooh and ahh at all  of the finishes. It was also exciting to see one of our members finish and show her very first quilt at our last meeting!

In case you are wondering about the  oportunity to display some quilts in a local mall in Surrey, I thought I would give you an update, We were not able to get enough quilts or help sitting with them. It was a good opportunity, but we didn't have much notice and it was on the Mother's Day weekend. The $250 would have been nice to get for our group, but that's OK. I know we are all busy and there is a limit to how much we can do.

Thanks to Lynne, we have had some extra days to quilt at Brookswood this year. Great things get accomplished at Brookwood quilt days. Friendships also get stronger through visiting at Brookswood days as well. I love how everyone is so willing to help each other out there whenever someone asks for advise.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Sincerely,

Gloria
