Crescent Quilters meeting minutes

Location: Hybrid meeting—In person at Seniors Come Share, lower level, and Zoom meeting

Date: May 16, 2022

Time: 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Attendees: 23 members in person, 2 members by Zoom (The meeting was recorded)

Minutes: Taken by and distributed by Gloria

Jean set up her iPad at Come Share to host the Zoom meeting. Gillian co-hosted the

Zoom meeting from home.

The meeting commenced at 7pm. The meeting was chaired by our President Susan. Susan welcomed

everyone. Julie Faulkner is the guest speaker of the evening.

Susan mentioned that shirt protectors needed at all Come Share locations – No Velcro on them please.

Donna explained to make a button hole or double stitch a rectangle, cut down the middle and put a little

fray check on it. Make it big enough so that the end from the other side can be pulled through. Susan

strongly suggests that our members each make some of these in the near future. Gloria will bring some

of the blue/white material from the hospital in June that people can use as liner for the shirt protectors.

Lynne, our Brookswood coordinator is away right now, therefore no Brookwood update.

Since we are approaching year end, the executive committee needs to be decided for next year.

Positions that have been held by the same person for a full term already are:

-Treasurer

-Hospitality

-Photographer

-Door prizes

-Sharzees

If anyone is in a position that they’ve done a full term for wants to stay on, please let Susan know. We

will need one more person to help join Marette with Program planning as Lisa has resigned from this

position. Anyone who wishes to join the executive committee please let Susan know.

Reminder—Please help put chairs away at the end of the meeting. Marette made a little diagram

showing how the chairs should be positioned at the end of the night.

Marette showed a handmade card from Kitka, expressing her thanks for inviting her to be our guest last

month.

For June we will have access to the upstairs room. Food—a vote will be sent out via email to have a

majority decision whether to have food or not in June. We didn’t have enough people to have a majority

vote in person at the May meeting.

Different options were discussed including:

- Garage Sale--we decided not to have one for a variety of different reasons.

- Strip Poker—still an option if we want.

- White Elephant table—Freebies available for anyone to take. The person who brings the items must

take any items back again if nobody takes them. This seemed like a favorable idea. Several people said

they liked this idea. There was no opposition to it. Bea, our treasurer reported that the bank balance as

of May 16th was $3,306.03 and our Petty cash balance was $191.60. The bank balance is with the

$250.00 deducted for Julie Faulkner.

Sew, Show ‘n’ Tell

Elaine—She told us about her trip to visit her sisters in Louisiana. The three sisters went on a road trip

together and covered six States. A highlight for Elaine was Hamilton Missouri. This is home of the

Missouri Star Quilt company. There are 17 shops owned by Jenny Doan in this area. Another highlight

was Lincoln Nebraska where they went to the International Quilt museum. One display had one person’s

collection of over 100 red and white quilts. Elaine bought a tile here as a souvenir which she showed us.

Helen—Shirt protectors x 5 to donate to Come Share

Gloria—Community quilt

Iris—Twister quilt

 --Baby quilts with Bambi fabric

--Scrappy baby quilt (orange, yellow and grey)

--Table runner. She made the blocks in Tsawwassen at a class in 1996

Donna—Showed Lisa’s quilts that she paper-pieced. Will be donated to the community. Donna will ask if

they can be hung on a wall somewhere in a common area. (Lisa was unable to attend)

Nancy—Showed her beautiful queen size quilt she made for her bed. It is a Tilda pattern. It was quilted

by Faith.

Jean—Showed and read her entire new fantastic children’s book “By the Salish Sea”. Each page of the

book is a quilted tile. The book will be available to purchase soon. Contact her if you wish to buy one.

Linda—Showed a slice and dice colorful quilt.

Bonnie—Strip quilt. For her daughter’s Mother in law who could use some cheer. Bonnie used fabric

from Ros on the back.

Carole—Necktie quilt. She washed the quilt after she completed it. She a trouble ties coming apart at

the seams when they were washed. She had to repair it after washing. Suggestions included using a light

interfacing when using different fabric such as silk in quilts.

Nicky—Showed her Round Robin quilt top from last year.

Gillian—her quilt was held up by Carole. It was a quilt from a friend in the United Nations women’s

guild.

Several Door prizes were given out. The Sharzees draw was done. It was won by Shelagh.

The guest speaker Julie Faulkner gave a fabulous trunk show.

- Meeting at Seniors Come Share. The benefit would be that weather wouldn’t matter. Some questioned

if food would be allowed as people would have to take their masks off to eat. This size of the room does

not allow for social distancing when masks are off. Marette, one of our program coordinators, suggested

that the executive committee brainstorm some ideas over the next month and present a few options to

the group so a decision can be made. People agreed that this would be a good idea.

Donna, our community quilt coordinator is collecting community quilts to donate. She has collected

many already this year. She will take them all in later in the year. Let her know if you need batting or

labels.

Carolyn, our sunshine coordinator –Said to please let her know if a member needs a little sunshine.

Susan announced that the date of the next Crescent Quilters’ meeting will be May 16th at Seniors Come

Share.

Sew, Show ‘n’ Tell

Linda B. showed a colorful quilt she completed. She had made the top quite awhile ago. She finally

finished it. The quilt was double sided.

Linda B. also showed a scrappy quilt with blue boarders. She also made a quilt using a repurposed

comforter. It contains many beautiful colors.

Marette showed a pretty shawl that had many yo-yo’s on it.

Iris made a shirt protector to donate to Come Share.

Iris also made a textile collage containing items such as lace to embellish it. She made it in a class. It is a

tree in a circle with an owl.

Iris also made two quilts with black, white and red indigenous fabric.

Iris also made an impressive 100 blocks for 100 days quilt. She started it July 1st, and ended October 8th

There were some blocks that were paper pieced. 99.8% of the fabric in the quilt was Tula Pink fabric.

She was sewing this quilt on her sundeck last summer when it was too hot to sew inside.

Helen made three green shirt protectors. She also made a brown and yellow hunter’s star community

quilt. She also made a blue scrap buster community quilt.

Faith made a beautiful diaper bag. It has back pack straps as well as an over the shoulder strap. The

inside has different compartments and pockets. The bottom has buttons on it to keep the bottom of the

bag from getting dirty. Faith also showed a beautiful work in progress quilt top that she is making for her

niece. It is pink, green, and white. It is huge --116” x 116”.

Lisa, one of our program coordinators introduced the guest speaker of the evening, Kitka Neyedli. Kitka

lives in Port Moody. She works at The Stichery fabric store in Port Moody. She was happy to join our

meeting as this was her first live presentation since Covid started.

Her presentation entitled “Pressing Matters” featured a live demo on best practices with pressing tools

& techniques as well as a Trunk Show of her works in quilting and hand embroidery.
