Minutes, Crescent Quilters Meeting, October 21, 2024

Karen D. opened the meeting by introducing our new members again for the benefit of those who missed the September meeting.

Executive reports:

Treasurer:          Susan brought updated membership cards.

Susan reviewed the process for selecting an insurance carrier. There was discussion concerning the common requirement for $5M coverage. CQA provides $3M. Additional cost for extra

Personal coverage while at Brookswood was also discussed. It was suggested that coverage was implied through the Brookswood membership itself.

A question was asked about coverage for our presenters.

It was decided to go ahead with CQA insurance ($712). Passed by show of hands.

Brookswood: Monika reminded us that Brookswood memberships must be renewed before January 1. Payment should be made to Crescent Quilters by cheque or, preferably, by direct deposit.  Monika will make one group payment to Brookswood when the fees have been collected. Membership is still $30 annually.

Membership: Linda C-B introduced herself and welcomed our new members.

Sunshine: Iris introduced herself and her role. She also showed our new members the Crescent Quilters Quilt and invited all those new, and new-ish, members who have not contributed a block yet to make an 11” block to add to the quilt.

Confidentiality forms: Karen distributed the remaining confidentiality preference forms.

Sign up sheets: Karen D reminded us about the various sign-up sheets for snacks, the Christmas party, show and tell.

Fundraising: Karen distributed the brochures for our Purdy’s fundraiser. Orders must be in by November 24. Pickup: December 9.

Projects: Canuck Place has requested bibs for the children. These are usually made of terry towelling with Velcro closures, but they will also accept ones more like the shirt protectors we make for Brella.

Christmas Party: December 9, 6:00 pm, Karen Bryson’s home. Thank you for opening your home to us Karen!

Bring your own plate, cutlery, and BYOB.

If you would like to take part in the gift exchange, it is to be homemade and a $20 limit.

Karen will be collecting money for the food bank if you would like to donate.

Show and Tell:

Karen B showed us her beautiful, large, taupe & black Christmas gnomes and snowmen quilt.

Linda CB showed us a lovely art quilt of a windmill reflected on water that she did at a Gloria Loughman workshop.

Jean H read, and showed, us her latest book quilt – a lovely, 30-page, story about a child growing into their very first bed.

Cindy S showed us her variegated turquoise and chevron quilt.

Elaine B brought her fall colours quilt. Each block has 29 pieces. Go Elaine!!

Iris Z showed a pink lap quilt made with 5” squares and 1 yard of fabric. The back is a very “hot” pink!

Lisa S brought a Covid round robin quilt in earth tones complete with bears and geese.

Carolyn showed her “Grinch” Christmas top.

Sarah showed a Quiltworx coral reef pattern quilt that Julie Faulkner helped her with. The quilt is shared among a group.

Donna M introduced community quilts which are donated to Peach Arch Residential care. She told us that she has backing and labels for us for our donation quilts. She also discussed how to do a rail fence or a 4 patch quilt, strip piecing methods and scrappy bindings.

Program: Gloria reminded all members to fill out the survey asking about program ideas.

Gloria told us about the upcoming shirt protector work day. Details below:

“The focus will be to get together for a fun social time to sew shirt protectors. I will bring lots of the material we use for the liners. We will make as many as we are able to in a day to donate to Brella. In addition to that, we have had a request to make some in smaller sizes for Canuck place. We will also do some of those.

Date: Saturday November 2nd

Time: 9:30 am - as long as you like

Room Capacity - 12

Address: 2672 151 Street (Very close to Brella)

Cost: $5.00 - I can take the money from you at the October Crescent Quilters' meeting, or you can pay on the day. Karen has already paid $30 for the room. I Any money over $30 that is collected will be used for coffee/treats etc.  A snack table will be set up. Snacks to put on the table for all to enjoy is optional. 

This is the first sewing get-together at Karen's complex. We are looking at booking some sewing retreats with workshop hosts in the future. Come for this first get-together to get to know each other better and enjoy sewing together in an informal setting.”

Gloria introduced our guest presenter, Julie Faulkner. Julie is a certified Quiltworx instructor and she showed us some beautiful quiltworx quilts she has made and given tutorials on. Then she showed us an extensive, and amazing, array of beautiful bags of all shapes and sizes. These were almost exclusively “By Annie” patterns and had so many uses. Thank you Julie, for a fun and informative evening.

Remember that the Fat Quarter exchange theme for November's meeting is “Christmas”.
