Meeting Minutes February 2025

Minutes, Crescent Quilters Meeting, Feb. 10, 2025

Location:

Brella, Upper Level, in person meeting

Date: Feb. 10, 2025

6:30 9:00 pm

 22 members plus 4 guests

Minutes taken and distributed by Carole N.

Karen D. opened the meeting by welcoming Debbie and Judy from the Ladner Quilt Guild. They are a new group with 65 members who meet every third Wednesday from 10 3. Debbie and Judy sold us raffle tickets for a lovely quilt.

The meeting focused on the Crescent Quilters Guidelines. We discussed the following things.

The previous guidelines referred to the September meeting as a Social. This meeting is an organizational meeting, not a social event. This will be amended in the new guidelines.

Community Quilts: Donna explained our community program again for the benefit of new members Each member is asked to make at least one small (approx. 36 by 36) community quilt for Residential Care at Peace Arch Hospital. Donna has batting and labels. If your quilt is slightly different dimensions, Donna can cut a special size on request. Also, we make shirt protectors for Brella as a thank you in lieu of rent. Members are encouraged to make these as well.

Brella Donations (Shirt Protectors): Karen D reported that Shirt protectors can now be left in Brellas staff room after our meetings. However, Mary Jo is no longer able to look after Brella Donations. Karen called for a volunteer. Elaine B volunteered. Thank you, Elaine.

Executive structure: To improve ease of communication, the Executive has been split into two groups. Executives make executive decisions, and the coordinators are not required to attend executive meetings or make decisions. The executive and coordinators will collaborate when necessary. The Executive consists of the President, Treasurer, Secretary, Program, Membership and Brookswood. Coordinators are Sharzees, Door Prizes, Community Quilts, Sunshine, Media and Brella Donations. Members agreed and the guidelines will be updated.

Members attendance requirement: we discussed if members should be required to attend a certain number of meetings per year. We decided that this was not necessary, due to many extenuating circumstances.

Membership size: after determining that we had a large enough meeting space and it would be good for the budget and attendance, we decided that we should increase the size of our Membership to 50. Our waitlist as of Feb 10 is 3 people. The guidelines will be updated.

Guests: we decided that guests did not have to pay $5 to attend a regular meeting without a speaker.

Workshops: we have started to have workshops again now that Covid is mostly over. We discussed the workshop section from the 2019/20 guidelines. The executive will finalize some details, and the guidelines will be distributed.

Show and Tell:

Linda C.B. showed a lovely scrap quilt she made from her best scraps. Her plan was to make each block attractive on its own, laid them out from dark to light, and threw in some white triangles to break it up. She also has been quite lucky at our meetings lately and showed us two table runners. One was from the fabric she won at Januarys meeting. The other was from the fabric she won at Bingo last year. And, she showed the Rosie the Riveter wall hanging she made for her daughters high school history classroom.

She also has work being shown at the Semiahmoo Arts Society Members Show. The exhibition runs from Feb 8 to March 1st at the Turnbull Gallery located in the South Surrey Rec and Arts Centre.

Carole N showed her lap quilt called Usagi. Thanks to Donna for the fabric donations and Faith for the freezer paper applique instruction.

Shelagh C and Donna M brought their versions of the Gypsy Wife quilt that several members made recently. Both are colourful, complex, beautiful and very different.

Elaine B showed a stunning geometric blue paper pieced quilt that started out easy but became quite challenging.

o She also reported that Mary Jo was selling a Janome Skyline S5 fully equipped, less that five years old, lightly used machine. If you are interested, please contact Elaine or Shelagh.

Update: Boundary Bay Quilters bus trip to the Quilters Anonymous 43rd Annual Quilt show on March 14 has been cancelled.
