Fidget quilts

If you were at our September meeting you will have heard what a fidget quilt is.

As a group we decided to make some fidget quilts to give to "Come Share" as a way of expressing our gratitude for having the venue for our meetings free of charge.

We can start making the quilts any time.

We decided to make 1/2" seam allowances to make them more durable for pulling and figeting with.

The blocks should be cut 6" so that the finished size is 5" each.

The following note is from Linda:
After our September meeting I talked with the therapist Roj at Come Share.  She said both the staff and their clients were very excited about this idea.  What the clients liked was the variety of colors and textures and the stimulation they provided.  They also requested that I send a history of the squares so they can talk with their clients about the different fabrics.  Attached are photos of the one I made.  I made mine with 5” squares, 4 blocks by 4 blocks as they requested they be 20”x20”.

Here is a list of what Sue, the director, originally sent out:

I talked with my team about ideas and they suggest the following:

Fidget blankets - 20x20

The top layer of the knee blanket is made of a variety of fabrics--textured, with a couple of the squares of material having a crinkle noise beneath them.  The varied textures awaken the senses and engage the individuals.

The bottom layer of fleece, it helps keep the fidget blanket from slipping off a lap. These fidget blankets are very helpful for maintaining fine motor skills and encouraging activities of daily living such as using buttons, zippers, laces, Velcro, etc. In addition, the fabric prints can evoke fond memories, the activities keep restless minds and fingers busy, and the various fabrics, ribbons beads and bells, crinkle paper under a couple of the fabrics and squeakers which all stimulate.

Ones designed for males and others for females would be ideal.

Let's plan on working on them together at one of the Brookswood days. At our next meeting we can talk about trading blocks and/or notions for making these quilts.
