Here are the directions for cutting your fabric for the mystery "Community Quilt"-- given by Diane

Fabric'requirements:''
F: 0.40 m
Start with choosing your border. Pick a colourful print - the border will be 3”
finished so that you can decide whether a particular print is too large or
small. You will need 0.40m.
From this print, pick 4 colours, and for each colour you will need 2 shades. For
instance, if you have a floral with green, pink, purple and blue, you will want two
shades of green (A1 & A2), 2 of pink (B1 & B2), 2 of purple (C1 & C2) and 2 of
blue (D1 & D2). They do not have to have a great deal of contrast between them,
but it is fine if they do. Because there is no strip piecing, using smaller scraps
are fine. Tone on tones, or solids will give the best effect, but don’t worry if there
is a tiny bit of another colour - for instance, small white dots on your blue. Just
avoid small, busy prints. You will need 0.10m of each (8 fabrics). I strongly
suggest using markers to colour in the chart below to keep your colours straight!
A1: 0.10m A2: 0.10m
B1: 0.10m B2: 0.10m
C1: 0.10m C2: 0.10m
D1: 0.10m D2: 0.10m
Finally, you will need a background colour (E). Make sure there is sufficient
contrast between your coloured fabrics and the background. You can go lighter
or darker than your colours. Avoid obvious prints, but use solids, tone on tones,
or a soft wash of colours like in a batik. You will need 0.70m.
E: 0.70m
If you have an easy angle ruler, we will be using that. If not, you’ll have to make
your half square triangles from squares - layering two pieces rst, and sewing on
both sides of the diagonal, and then cutting on the diagonal.
Cutting'Instructions:'
A11: Cut 1 – 3 ½ “ strip (or 3 7/8” if you do not have an Easy Angle ruler).
From this, A11: cut 8 half square triangles (hst) using Easy Angle ruler (or
4 – 3 7/8” squares).
A12: 1 – 3 ½” square.
A13: Trim remainder of strip to 2”. Cut 8 – 2” squares.
A2: Cut 1 – 3 ½” strip. (or 3 7/8” strip without ruler). From this, cut 8 hst’s
using Easy Angle ruler (or 4 – 3 7/8” squares).
B11: Cut 1 – 3 ½ “ strip (or 3 7/8” if you do not have an Easy Angle ruler).
From this, B11: cut 8 half square triangles (hst) using Easy Angle ruler (or
4 – 3 7/8” squares).
B12: 1 – 3 ½” square.
B13: Trim remainder of strip to 2”. Cut 8 – 2” squares.
B2: Cut 1 – 3 ½” strip. (or 3 7/8” strip without ruler). From this, cut 8 hst’s
using Easy Angle ruler (or 4 – 3 7/8” squares).
C11: Cut 1 – 3 ½ “ strip (or 3 7/8” if you do not have an Easy Angle ruler).
From this, C11: cut 8 half square triangles (hst) using Easy Angle ruler (or
4 – 3 7/8” squares).
C12: 1 – 3 ½” square.
C13: Trim remainder of strip to 2”. Cut 8 – 2” squares.
C2: Cut 1 – 3 ½” strip. (or 3 7/8” strip without ruler). From this, cut 8 hst’s
using Easy Angle ruler (or 4 – 3 7/8” squares).
D11: Cut 1 – 3 ½ “ strip (or 3 7/8” if you do not have an Easy Angle ruler).
From this, D11: cut 8 half square triangles (hst) using Easy Angle ruler (or
4 – 3 7/8” squares).
D12: 1 – 3 ½” square.
D13: Trim remainder of strip to 2”. Cut 8 – 2” squares.
D2: Cut 1 – 3 ½” strip. (or 3 7/8” strip without ruler). From this, cut 8 hst’s
using Easy Angle ruler (or 4 – 3 7/8” squares).
Cut larger background pieces first, cutting remainder from leftovers
E1: Cut 4 – 15 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles
E2: Cut 4 – 9 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles
E3: Cut 4 – 6 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles
E4: Cut 24 hst from 3 ½” strips using Easy Angle ruler (or 12 - 3 7/8” squares)
E5: Cut 16 – 2” squares
E6: Cut 16 – 2 x 3 ½” rectangles
